Rolex presents a series of performances, screenings, readings and talks featuring the artists of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. The Arts Initiative, founded in 2002, pairs rising stars in Dance, Theatre, Film, Music, Visual Arts and Literature with internationally renowned masters for a year of mentorship. Current and previous Rolex mentors and protégés gather in New York to present work during the Rolex Arts Weekend, a multi-generational showcase of exceptional creative talent.

Admission to all events is free of charge.

Bridging Cultures, Generations and Market Forces

Emerging and iconic artists discuss the dynamic balance of the creative and the commercial, the value of inter-generational teaching, and the power of art to transcend borders. Panellists include John Baldessari, William Forsythe, Joseph Melillo, Lynn Redgrave, Anthony Minghella, Anna Deavere Smith, Amitav Ghosh and others. The event is moderated by Kurt Andersen, novelist and host of public radio's Peabody Award-winning culture magazine Studio 360.

This is a rare opportunity to see three emerging stars of the international dance world who each trained for a year with a renowned master through the Arts Initiative. Togolese dance artist Anani Dodji Sanouvi (mentored by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker), Junaid Jemal Sendi of Ethiopia (mentored by Saburo Teshigawara), and Sang Jijia of China (mentored by William Forsythe) will all present new work.

Two gifted musicians from the Arts Initiative will give a performance at the Tishman Auditorium. Violist David Aaron Carpenter, who is currently working with mentor Pinchas Zukerman, and mezzo-soprano Susan Platts (mentored by Jessye Norman) will perform chamber music in various combinations, accompanied by the pianist Julien Quentin. Renowned violinist, violist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman will introduce the programme.
