Julia Leigh Reads at Barnard College
In early December 2005, Literature protégée Julia Leigh read from her new work at Barnard College. The reading was part of Advancing the Arts Across Generations and Borders, a series of public events organised by the Rolex Arts Initiative in New York City. The reading was prefaced by an introduction questions-and-answers period. Born in Australia in 1970, Leigh was a published writer living in France with a novel to her credit (The Hunter) when the mentoring year began. For the first few months of the mentoring year, Leigh sent sections of the draft of her second novel to Morrison for comment and discussion. In April 2003, she moved to New York City to be closer to her mentor, whose reassurance and encouragement were, in her eyes, the most important elements of the mentoring year. Leigh now lives in Sydney.
