Hear and Now
Lara Foot Newton’s Showcase Performance, 2006
For the second time, theatre protégée Lara Foot Newton opened a play at London’s Gate Theatre – the city’s self-appointed “home of international drama”. Hear and Now, her Rolex-sponsored performance, ran from June 2 to 24, 2006. The play is billed as “a love story, about people who are not young anymore”. It has also been described as “the anatomy of a relationship between a man and a woman who live in a village that is gradually sinking into the earth”.
South African Lara Foot Newton, currently resident director/dramaturge at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, wrote the play with her husband Lionel Newton. It is directed by Foot Newton and co-directed and designed by Gerhard Marx. It stars Lionel Newton and Denise Newman.
In the past, Lara Foot Newton has created plays with a social or political message, often highlighting the tensions experienced in her native South Africa.
Hear and Now marks a departure from her previous work, with Foot Newton choosing instead to focus on more universal themes regarding the nature of human relationships.
Lara sharing her thoughts on the creation and impact of the play.
