Biography

Published in 2011

For over a decade, Lebanese actor, writer and aspiring director Maya Zbib has been impressing critics with her subtle portrayals in widely diverse roles. Her multi-genre work bridges theatre and performance by marrying the two practices through a variety of techniques. Having acquired a Master’s in Performance Making from Goldsmiths, University of London, Zbib has created and performed in solo work, including The Music Box, a performance-installation staged in people’s houses and showcased at international festivals. She currently co-manages Beirut’s Zoukak Theatre Company and Cultural Association, which she co-founded, and also teaches at Lebanese University’s Institute of Fine Arts. In 2009, she was invited to participate in the British Council’s Cultural Leadership International programme. Dedicated to theatre-making that has an impact on society, Zbib says of Peter Sellars, her Mentor in the 2010-2011 Rolex Arts Initiative: “I am very inspired by Mr Sellars’ advocacy of theatre as a force for change.” During the mentoring year, she and Peter Sellars observed each other’s theatre work – and that of others – in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Chicago and Beirut, developing a strong and lasting professional relationship.
