The Garden

In November 2007, Matthias Weischer opened The Garden at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein. The show marked the first time that Weischer held a solo exhibition at a public institution in Berlin.

The exhibition’s 150 drawings on paper focus primarily on garden and landscape motifs, and were completed during Weischer’s time as a fellow-in-residence at Rome’s Villa Massimo.
“A new beginning and continuity are present in equal measure in Weischer’s new works,” says Alexander Tolnay, director of the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein. “One essential characteristic of Weischer’s oeuvre hasn’t changed: the constant, persevering exploration of spatial phenomenon. The pictures also remain without human figures.”
A catalogue of Weischer’s exhibition was also published by Hatje Cantz, with financial support from the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.
His mentor, David Hockney, is very appreciative of Matthias Weischer’s new work and reflects fondly on his time spent with him. “His work interested me at first because of his attitude to pictorial space and as I got to know it, more layers were revealed,” Hockney says. “He knows looking is a very positive act. The more one looks the more one sees. His skills as a draughtsman are revealed here, the deep pleasures of the hand, the eye and the heart.”
